Summer 2027 Myth Busters

MYTH: Campers should attend Starter Camp, then Mariners, then a four-week session.

FACT: Many Starter Campers skip the Mariners program and jump right into one of our signature four-week sessions. These campers do great! We recommend listening to your camper. If your camper is talking about Camp year-round or asking to attend a longer session, these are signs they are ready.

MYTH: My camper is getting older and has done all the activities.

FACT: There are programs, certifications and experiences that are reserved for only our oldest campers. While some experiences are connected to rank achievement, many are available to all of our older campers. Even if your camper has attended several summers, there is still more to do and learn, plus, the gift of reuniting with friends from previous summers is lifelong.

MYTH: Starter Campers have Wave 2 priority registration, so they will be able attend any Mariners session.

FACT: Mariners I will likely not be available to returning Starter Campers unless they have a sibling who is able to enroll in Mariners I or First Session during Wave 1. Historically, very few campers come off the Mariners I waitlist. It is not uncommon for other Mariners sessions to also be waitlisted when Wave 2 begins. We always recommend registering for an available session over a waitlist, as many waitlisted campers will not be offered available spots.

MYTH: Mariners is just like the four-week session, only shorter.

FACT: The four-week experience is significantly more robust than the two-week Mariners experience. Campers have the opportunity to settle in, form more meaningful relationships, develop more advanced skills and participate in programming opportunities that are not available to two-week campers. The four-week session is the epitome of the SGSF experience.

MYTH: All 16-year-olds can be a CILT, and that’s the only way to be on staff one day.

FACT: The CILT program is competitive and limited to 36 rising juniors per session at each site. Campers who are interested in this opportunity will need to submit an application and letters of recommendation. Counselors in our oldest cabins (15-year-olds) are asked to recommend the campers who lead by example, get along well with others and make a positive impact on their cabin. While 80-90% of our CILTs are hired as counselors the following summer, we also hire rising seniors who did not participate in the CILT program.
