Batten Down the Hatches

Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer are currently closed. Over the last week, our teams have been working to secure all facilities at Sea Gull, Seafarer and the Outpost in Morehead City in preparation for the impact of Hurricane Florence.

Facilities

Boats have been taken out of the water and, along with Camp vehicles, have been moved to higher ground or put in garages. Equipment is in storage and “anything that can move” has been secured as we brace for the storm. Be assured that we continue to take all the necessary steps to ensure that Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer are prepared to endure Hurricane Florence.

Staff

In the interest of safety, as well as a mandated evacuation of Pamlico County, all Extended Season staff have relocated to YMCA Camp Kanata in Wake Forest, NC for the duration of the storm. The safety and well-being of our staff remain our top priority and we are so thankful to Camp Kanata for their friendship and care.

We have also offered one of our busses and a driver to assist with transportation of Pamlico County residents to Wake County during the mandatory evacuation. As of 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 11, all staff were safely off of Camp grounds.

Community Engagement

Pamlico County Emergency Management Services and the senior leadership at Tideland Electric have played an integral part in our storm planning at Camp and for Pamlico County. In partnership with these groups, Camp Seafarer will serve as home base to 75 crew workers who will be housed onsite in cabins and act as first-responders during and after the storm. FLIK, our food service provider, is prepared to serve meals to the first responders housed at Camp Seafarer.

Updates and More Information

Be sure to check our Facebook, Sea Gull Instagram and Seafarer Instagram for updates and also back here on our site. We will continue to share pertinent information as we are able.

After the storm passes, we will assess both Sea Gull and Seafarer and determine if we are able to host Homecoming Weekend and other scheduled Extended Season programming this fall.

Thank you to all of our Camp community, families and alumni for the outpouring of support and offers of assistance that we’ve received these last few days. It is incredibly humbling and inspiring to see the power and reach of Camp at work.

Stay tuned and stay safe!
