Sea Program

Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer proudly specialize in Sailing and Motorboating and strive to teach campers all about boats and the sea. A dynamic, comprehensive program featuring Seamanship offers campers a unique camping experience. Large, well-maintained fleets of sailboats and powerboats provide campers with exceptional boating opportunities in the five- mile-wide Lower Neuse River adjacent to the Pamlico Sound. All sea program activities are monitored by US Coast Guard-licensed counselors from a control tower and radio-equipped patrol boats. Our well-trained sea staff consists of over 100 staff at Camp Sea Gull and over 60 at Camp Seafarer. Campers are required to wear life preservers during all boating activities.

Each camper has a personal Seamanship Manual (the "Blue Book") in which new skills are recorded and rank achievements are noted. Recognition of these accomplishments is maintained from summer to summer as overall skills grow on the big water.

Sailing

The sailing program teaches the proper handling of many types of sailboats, good seamanship, cruising, navigation and racing. The program challenges the knowledge and skill level of all campers. Novice sailors master the fundamental skills on 13' Sunfish and 13' Lasers; more experienced sailors advance to 19' Lightnings at Camp Sea Gull and 19' Flying Scots at Camp Seafarer, JY-15s, 16' - 18' Hobie Cats and larger Keel Boats. Advanced sailors may choose courses in racing rules and tactics and sail repair. Skills are perfected in daily regattas and cruises.

Motorboating

Teaching campers the advanced skills of handling various types of outboards and inboards is a program specialty. The motorboating program provides daily opportunities for instruction in boat handling, seamanship, rules of the road, navigation, engine and boat maintenance and repair; docking and anchoring. Upon demonstration of competence in boat handling, campers with demonstrated swimming ability are allowed to operate a 13' outboard motorboat on their own. As they progress, campers have the opportunity to learn and demonstrate handling and operation of our fleet of larger 25' diesel-powered inboard vessels.

One of the most popular activities on our sea program is water-skiing. Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer feature individual instruction in water-skiing for both beginners and advanced skiers. In addition to practicing on two skis, campers can progress to kneeboarding, wakeboarding, slalom skiing and trick skiing. Campers also enjoy tubing and other towable devices.
