The Story of Captain Bill & Sarah Carver Adams
As Lil Taylor would say, “One never knows what one will find oneself doing at camp!” And, we might add, “One never knows how going to camp might change your life forever!” When we met each other over forty years ago at Camp Seafarer, we had no idea that Sea Gull and Seafarer would shape the rest of our lives. Bill was Sailing Master at Seafarer, and Sarah was on the Camper Services Staff, then Head Counselor of Camp IV when we met. Bill came to the Central YMCA on Hillsborough Street to work as Assistant Youth Director during the fall and winter months and as Sailing Master at Seafarer during the summer. It was then that he asked Sarah, a Raleigh school teacher, out to dinner. Well, the rest if history! We were married in 1970, with Lil and Wyatt Taylor, Jerry and Burnie Batchelor, and Jim and Annette Epps in attendance! Our many years at Seafarer as we continued to serve as Assistant Directors and Directors were a huge part of our lives, having two children during that time, watching them grow up in the camp environment to become campers, staff members, sailing assistants, and sailing master.
We believe everyone at Seafarer enjoyed speculating our future together, and one funny incident that occurred was when the staff kept playing the song, “Will you Marry Me Bill?” constantly the summer before we were married in November!
To this day, we love Sea Gull and Seafarer and will always be grateful that are paths crossed and we “found each other’s valentine!”
Did you know that Lil Taylor had a folder in her filing cabinet with names of Sea Gull/Seafarer romances all during the years?
The Story of Terrell & Coach Kennedy
Coach and I met years ago when we were on staff. However, it was not until several years later that we were reintroduced to each other at Lloyd and Cille's celebration weekend. I was facilitating the weekend and Coach was a volunteer on weekend staff. That weekend, our mutual friend Jill Shumate Thompson turned our attention to each other. After the weekend we both returned to Raleigh, where a crew of more mutual camp friends, Emily Adams Livingston and E.A. Ritter went to work on setting us up. In fact, they went so far as to arrange a group dinner and then strategically bailed on the evening without notifying me and Coach. The rest was history. We continued to date for three years and then got married in October of 2008. Because camp was our initial common bond, it continues to be an important and special part of our life today. Coach started as a camper in the 90s and was a counselor and UA on Motorboating at CSG. He now is the Sea Program Director and CSF. I started at CSF in 2000 as a staff member and have held various positions such as Athletics Chief, Land Director, and Head Counselor
The Story of Sean & Molly Bills Ostmann
Sean and I met in 2005. He worked in the Marina and I drove the Iliad—one of camp’s inboards—and was in the Marina daily. We became friends and kept in touch throughout the year then started dating the next summer. At the beginning of summer 2008 we got dinner to go from Gary’s and took the Iliad out on the Neuse to eat. I was driving back into the Marina when he stopped the boat and proposed! We were married in September of 2009 by Lloyd Griffith.
We both still work for camp—Sean in the Marina and I am in the Non-Profit Management Training program.
The Story of Mike & Mary Talbert Newman
Mikey and I met first met during the summer of 2007 when I was a Sailing UA at CSF and Mikey was the Golf Chief at CSG. One of Mikey's good friends, Mike Ellis, introduced us during starter camp. Mikey has a great sense of humor and we became friends right away. Our friendship grew during first session even though we were on different TO schedules. When session break rolled around, Mikey asked me on a date and we've been together even since!
Mikey brought me back to New Bern to propose in January 2009 and we got married overlooking the Neuse River in October of that year. We head back to camp every chance we get. It will always be a special place for us!
