Seamanship

What you need to know!

Knot Tying

As you begin earning Seamanship ranks at Camp, knot tying is your foundation.  You use specific knots in different situations on the water and we will teach you!  From a Figure 8 to a Bowline, Sheetbend to a Clove hitch, our Sailing and Powerboating counselors will make sure that you know the perfect knot to tie.

Your competency on our boats will quickly develop and you will learn applications for more advanced knots like a Running Bowline or a Clove hitch with a round turn!

Navigation

Start with Rules of the Road (and by that, we mean water!) and learn how to use Aids to Navigation (like the lateral waterway marking system).  Graduate to course plotting, compass error correction, dead reckoning, plotting a fix and use of current technology.  Once you have it down, try plotting your own course ... check out a boat, use marks in the Neuse River and see if you can complete your course by your estimated time of arrival.  We know you can do it!

Boat Maintenance

Learn how to repair hull damage through our hull repair classes.  What happens if a sail rips? We can teach you how to repair a sail! Want to know how to change a spark plug on an outboard, we have engine maintenance classes to teach you just that! We will also teach you proper care of your vessel and appropriate safety equipment.
