Sailing

The sailing program teaches the proper handling of many types of sailboats, good seamanship, cruising, navigation and racing. The program challenges the knowledge and skill level of all campers. Novice sailors master the fundamental skills on 13' Sunfish and 13' Lasers; more experienced sailors advance to 19' Lightnings at Camp Sea Gull and 19' Flying Scots at Camp Seafarer, JY-15s, 16' - 18' Hobie Cats and larger Keel Boats.

Once they earn basic sailing ranks, campers may check out smaller sailboats and adventure into open water with friends. Patrol boats, captained by sailing counselors, are there every step of the way to guide sailors, offer assistance and tips to adjust their sails. Advanced sailors may choose courses in racing rules and tactics and sail repair. Skills are perfected in daily regattas and cruises.

Our sailing curriculm is based on guidelines and recommendations from US Sailing.  We offer US Sailing Small Boat certification as well as US Sailing Keel Boat certification courses.

We're off to a great first day at Sea Gull. After cabin pictures, campers spend the day going through sea and land orientation, swim assessments, renewing ranks or earning first ranks. It's a beautiful start to our summer with clear blue skys and a nice Sea Gull wind blowing. What a great day to be at Camp Sea Gull!
